Ang Lee and Wong Kar Wai Shine At NY Critics Awards

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has great hopes of getting himself another golden figure.

He won Best Director Award at the just-released New York Film Critics Circle Awards. His film Brokeback Mountain also won for Best Picture.

The New York Film Critics Circle is the oldest critical group in America. It is comprised of critics from daily and weekly newspapers based in New York. The NYFCC awards are generally considered a precursor to the Oscars.

After becoming a hot favorite with the Golden Globes, Chinese-born director Ang Lee has proven himself again by winning Best Director and Best Picture for his film Brokeback Mountain in New York.

An epic love story set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and Texas, Brokeback Mountain tells the story of two young men who meet in the summer of 1963, and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection.

The gay-themed movie aroused much controversy in the US but was welcomed by critics. Ang Lee says he never expected "Brokeback" to be a critically acclaimed film.

"When I was making the movie I didn't imagine awards or that a lot of people would see the movie. I thought it would be a lonely movie. Somehow we trusted the tale. We were doing a love story. Somehow we don't think about that anymore. When the movie is done we've gotten so much love and good will."

In other categories, Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress for the film “Walk the Line” and Maria Bello won Best Supporting Actress for her work in “A History of Violence”.

Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai took home honors for the Best Foreign-Language Film for "2046." He regards the sci-fi film as an international one rather than one shot for the Chinese.

"Well in fact to me it's like the film has been released all over the world. I don't consider the film here or there. It's like a family of audiences."

Gigi Leung, Ekin Cheng confirmed split up

BEIJING, Jan. 9 -- The year 06 has begun and the first pair in the entertainment circle have split.

Six years ago Ekin Cheng and Gigi Leung received a lot of pressure stepping into the relationship road. No one predicted that yesterday rumors of their split would spread. Both Gigi and Ekin's managers have confirmed this situation.

Gigi's manager revealed that the two had reached mutual agreement on this split. The two are always individually busy and had very little time to see each other. Gigi requested for more time to spend with her family. Gigi's manager said, "The two's split has already happened so the outside shouldn't speculate."

When asked again who wanted to split up first, Gigi's manager refused with a straightforward reply. She only said, "Who started it isn't under the control of us." So is this a hint it was Ekin's idea to split up first? She replies, "You can go ask Ekin yourself. I can only say that the two have split but will remain friends."

When asked what were Gigi's feelings right now? Is she not happy? The manager said that the company of course does not want its artists not to be happy, but she herself thinks that Gigi's feelings are stable and will continue work.

On the other hand Ekin's manager said, "This is personal stuff so as a manager I can only confirm the two's split. Ekin will appear at a camera function very soon, at that time he will reply to the matters.

I can only say, even if they can't work it out as a love partners, they can still be friends. The also two reached mutual agreement before they split!"

Actress Jeon Ji-hyeon Likely to Focus on Foreign Market for the Time Being
(2006/01/09)

Actress Jeon Ji-hyeon will likely refrain from acting in Korean films for the time being after her new film "Daisy" (2006) is released in early February.

Jeon worked together with foreign actors for the film "Windstruck" (2004) and a foreign director (Andrew Lau from Hong Kong) for the film "Daisy." She plans to make her presence known in earnest in the overseas film market in 2006. To this end, Jeon will refrain from acting in Korean films for now and will prepare for her advance into the overseas film market, while keeping in touch with foreign film producers.

A person close to Jeon said, "Many stars from Chinese-speaking regions engage in brisk activities in the overseas film market, including Hollywood. But no Korean actors or actresses have made their presence known conspicuously yet. So, Jeon has decided to suspend her acting in Korean films and seek an opportunity to advance into the overseas market this year."

Jeon will likely leave for the United States this summer and stay there for a while. During her stay there, she will brush up on her English and look for opportunities in the overseas film market, including Hollywood.

Jeon has so far continued her study of conversational English and made steady preparations for her advance into the overseas film market. Based on such preparations, she will look for the best opportunity to make her presence established as a genuine "hallyu" star. The person close to Jeon added, "This year, Jeon Ji-hyeon will look for a spot as a 'global star,' not as a mere 'hallyu star.'"

Actress Lee Young-ae Invited to Berlin Film Festival as Juror
(2006/01/10)

Actress Lee Young-ae has been invited to the 56th Berlin International Film Festival slated for Feb. 9, local time, as a juror for its international competition division.

Lee Joo-yul, president of Lee Young-ae's agency, Door Entertainment, said on Jan. 9, "Ms. Lee Young-ae has been invited to the Berlin International Film Festival as a juror for its international competition division. She will join seven to nine other jurors to select the winners of the Golden Bear and other awards from among about 20 films presented by countries from around the world."

This is the first time for a Korean actor or actress to be invited as a juror to the competition division of any of the world's top three international film festivals -- the Cannes, Berlin and Venice festivals.

From Asia, the Berlin International Film Festival has so far invited actresses mainly from Chinese-speaking regions, such as Maggie Cheung (張曼玉, 1997), Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊, 1999), and Gong Li (鞏悧, 2000).

According to Lee Joo-yul, the organizers of the Berlin International Film Festival have reportedly taken interest in evaluations made by other international film festivals, including the Venice Film Festival, of Lee Young-ae's latest film "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005) directed by Park Chan-wook.

Back in 2001, Park's previous film "Joint Security Area" (2000) starring Lee Young-ae was invited to the competition division of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Meanwhile, Lee Joo-yul expressed his displeasure with some local news media outlets' hasty reporting of the film festival's selection of Lee Young-ae as a juror.

Lee Joo-yul said, "Ms. Lee Young-ae already received an official invitation from the film festival on Sep. 29 last year. We did not make it public at a request from the film festival's secretariat to keep it quiet."

The 56th Berlin International Film Festival will be held for ten days from Feb. 9 to 19. Lee Young-ae will leave for Berlin in advance to attend an official press conference arranged for the jury of the film festival.

The jury of this year's Berlin International Film Festival will be chaired by Charlotte Rampling, a British actress who has come into the spotlight for her films "Angel Heart" (1987) and "Swimming Pool" (2003).

Actress Lee Young-ae Tops Hong Kong Chart as "Woman of the Year"
(2005/01/02)

"Hallyu" star actress Lee Young-ae (35) has topped the list in Hong Kong for "Woman of the Year in 2005."

On Dec. 31 2005, RTHK, a public network in Hong Kong, released the results of a mail-based poll of 1,398 citizens. It showed Lee Young-ae, the lead actress of the soap opera "Jewel in the Palace" (Daejanggeum), atop the list with 49 percent of the votes.

Lee was chosen as the "Woman of the Year in 2005" by far outdistancing the second place choice--an elderly woman named Lu Shaolan (21 percent), who became famous for filing a lawsuit against a giant real estate corporation.

"Jewel in the Palace" was aired on Hong Kong's TVB from Jan. 24 to May 1, 2005, hitting an all-time high in viewership rates (average rate of 47 percent and a high of 50 percent) in the history of Hong Kong TV broadcasting.

It is estimated that 3.28 million Hong Kong residents, or half of the entire population of the city, watched the drama. The Hong Kong daily "Ming Bao" chose "Jewel in the Palace" as the TV drama of the year.

Meanwhile, pop singer Rain ranked second as the "Man of the Year in 2005" with 22 percent of the votes following Donald Tsang, Hong Kong's Chief Executive (33 percent). The late Pope John Paul II, who died in April 2005, ranked third with 13 percent of the votes.

Asia Goes Crazy Over Korean Pop Culture

The hottest thing in Asian pop culture these days is South Korea. The so-called Korean wave covers the craze for South Korean TV dramas, movies and pop singers - but increasingly also for fashion, cosmetics and electronics.
The Korean drama "Jewel in the Palace" clocked up record television ratings in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan last year. Even Chinese President Hu Jintao admitted to being a fan of the historical drama about a cook at Korea's royal court. The show's actors have become mega stars across Asia.

South Korea has been exporting movies and TV dramas since the late 1990s. Many Asian TV networks initially bought them because the glossy productions were comparatively cheap. But audiences from China to the Philippines soon got hooked.

Lisa Leung is assistant professor of cultural studies at Hong Kong's Lingnan University. She says one of the reasons for the dramas' strong appeal is that, unlike Western productions, they are culturally close to Asian viewers.

"Audiences can not only identify with the skin color, the hair color, the similar faces and looks of Korean actors and actresses but also the kind of values expressed in these TV dramas," she explained. "More to the point the kind of stress on familial values, the filial piety, the love between siblings and friendship and all these elements that might make Korean television dramas so popular in Asia."

South Korean pop stars, like the singer BoA, have also achieved cult status in many Asian countries. One young woman in Hong Kong looks for magazines and posters featuring her favorite pop star, the South Korean singer and actor Rain.

"I like him, I'm his big fan," she said. "He dances great and he sings great. And his performance in the drama is good as well."

The popularity of South Korean films and music has led to a veritable craze for everything Korean across Asia.

Hong Kong street markets sell traditional Korean robes to children and some brides in China are wearing them for wedding photos.

Learning Korean has become increasingly popular in many Asian countries, as have Korean food, fashion and cosmetics. Ms. Leung says in China the craze has even meant more people undergoing plastic surgery, as she noticed during a research trip last year.

"I found that there were more and more younger girls and also older women wanting to go through plastic surgery," she said. "They would be visiting these hospitals which stress this kind of Korean-style cosmetic technology. This is not too much of a question of wanting to look more Korean, but I think in mainland China the audience might have been affected by Korean TV dramas and that they want to look more beautiful."

Ms. Leung says advertisements featuring South Korean idols have resulted in increased sales for the country's products, such as Samsung mobile phones or LG electrical appliances.

Shim Doo-bo, a South Korean, is assistant professor of communications and new media at Singapore's National University. He says Koreans living overseas have profited from the popularity of their country's cultural exports - like the South Korean housewives he interviewed in Singapore.

"They reported to me that after the immense popularity of Korean television dramas and films they feel that they are better treated by local Singaporean people," said Shim Doo-bo.

In many parts of Asia, Korea has become a byword for cool. South Koreans have coined a new word to describe the phenomenon: Hallyu, meaning "Korean wave".

Mr. Shim says his country has not been slow to cash in on the craze.

"Many regional governments within Korea have built up theme parks based on the characters of Korean dramas and films and the image of [South] Korea of a country which used to be known to other countries for labor strikes or student demonstration strikes for democracy is slowly moving to cool or fashionable or dynamic," he said. "So that recently officially the [South] Korean government inaugurated a campaign of so-called dynamic Korea as its catchphrase for the tourist industry."

As Asian tourists are now visiting South Korea specifically to see the locations where popular dramas are shot, the government has organized events with famous entertainers and launched a multilingual web site with information on movies and TV dramas, actors and filming locations.

The Korean wave is a point of national pride for South Korea. After having been colonized or overshadowed by its neighbors, Japan and China, for centuries, the country finally has the chance to outdo them on the cultural stage.

But Hallyu has also boosted South Korea's economy. In 2004, the export of film and television programs along with tourism and merchandising generated revenues totaling nearly $2 billion.

135 Mln Movie Tickets Sold in Korea, Up 3.8% from Last Year

The Korean movie industry is expected to have a good year, with the release of Korean blockbuster movies forecast to attract more people, to the cinema this year.
Chang Yeo-jeong reports.

In Korea last year, about five million more people went to the movies than in 2004.
Local film studio, IM Pictures says about 135 million movie tickets were sold throughout Korea, with 308 films released, 87 being Korean.
IM Pictures did point out the rise seen in 2005 wasn't much, since the number of moviegoers has been rising on average between seven and 30 percent in recent years.
Some movie critics say such a minimal rise suggests a slowdown in the local movie market.
However, other experts say Korea's theaters will attract more moviegoers this year, as a number of both local and foreign blockbuster films continue to bring in people.
In December alone, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" attracted 1.3 million people, followed closely by Korea's new high-budget movie "Typhoon" which drew slightly over 1 million.
Peter Jackson's "King Kong,” in third place, is also expected to attract more moviegoers early this year.
Critics say in 2006, similar to last year, Korean movies may help boost the market.
Ticket sales declined in the first half of 2005, due to the absence of major hits, however the second half bounced back strongly with the help of Korean films.
"Marathon,” also called the "Running Boy,” about an autistic man overcoming hardships was one of the hottest flicks of the year, along with "Welcome to Dongmakgol".
More film lovers overseas have been showing an interest in Korean cinema in recent years, and this new demand is anticipated to increase local industry sales.

Lautes Lachen
Wer weiß, was uns da erwartet. Verwundert
Im Remake von "My sassy girl" ist ja mittlerweile Jessica Alba das neueste Gerücht für die Hauptrolle.
