Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi has been cast to star in the third installment of the ``Chopok Manura (My Wife Is a Gangster)'' series.
Zhang, who made a cameo appearance at the end of the 2003 film `` My Wife Is a Gangster 2,'' has agreed to play one of the main characters of the upcoming gangster comedy, according to local company Hyunjin Cinema, which will co-produce the film with China Film Group.

The company is currently in negotiations with actress Shin Eun-kyeong to reprise her role as the gangster boss Eun-jin. The third film of the series will tell the story of Eun-jin going to China on a mission of revenge. Since receiving international attention for the film ``Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' Zhang has appeared in such films as ``House of Flying Daggers,'' ``Hero,'' ``2046'' and ``Rush Hour 2,'' as well as the Korean film ``Musa.'' She will also star in the upcoming film ``Memoirs of a Geisha.'' The movie will be filmed mostly in China and will be released late next year.

So, um hier mal etwas Klarheit (hoffentlich) reinzubringen, ein Update:

Unter diesem Link sind weitere Informationen zu finden. Weiter unten wird zwar noch diskutiert, ob die Informationen denn vertrauenswürdig seien, es hat zumindest den Anschein.

Ich bin mal gespannt, was man von dem Film erwarten darf, sehr schade fände ich, wenn sich bestätigen würde, dass die Hauptdarstellerin aus den ersten beiden Teilen, Shin Eun-Kyung, gar nicht mehr oder nur in einem Kurzauftritt zu sehen sein sollte.
Die Dreharbeiten sind angeblich für März vorgesehen.

Fanny Replaces Zhang Ziyi in Korean Film

Sexy Hong Kong star Fanny Su (舒淇) has signed with South Korean Hyunjin Cinema to star as the female lead in the third installment of "My Wife is a Gangster "《我老婆是大佬3》.

Famous Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi was previously invited to star in the comedy, but ultimately failed to solidify an agreement.

Fanny Su has been confirmed to play the daughter of the head of a sinister gang in the film, which will start shooting on May 7. The male lead has not been decided yet.

This is the first time for Fanny Su to join a Korean project. She will fly to South Korea to prepare for the new film in April.

The first installment of the film series gained wide popularity in China in 2002.

Shu steeping in after Zhang passes on role

Taiwanese superstar Shu Qi will star in Korean comedy "My Wife Is a Gangster 3," set to start shooting in April.

The $6 million production by Hyunjin Cinema originally was to feature "Memoirs of a Geisha" star Zhang Ziyi, who made a cameo appearance in "My Wife Is a Gangster 2." However, the two sides failed to agree on terms.

Announcement comes amid a boom of sorts for South Korean comedy sequels, with "Marrying the Mafia 2" earning $35 million locally last fall and "My Boss, My Teacher" (sequel to 2001 hit "My Boss, My Hero") setting a new comedy record with $39 million in January.

Shu ("Three Times," "So Close") plays the feisty daughter of a boss in the Hong Kong underworld, who takes refuge in South Korea, where she falls in love with a gangster.

Pic will be directed by Jo Jin-gyu, helmer of the original film, which earned $24 million in South Korea and spent two weeks on top of the Hong Kong B.O..

Miramax bought remake rights to that film in 2001, although the remake has languished in development.

'My Wife Is a Gangster 3' Takes New Direction With Hong Kong Actress

Local gangster comedy "My Wife Is a Gangster (Chopok Manura)" was a huge hit in 2001, drawing over 5 million moviegoers. But as goes with many sequels, the 2003 sequel was disappointing and commercially unsuccessful attracting less than 2 million viewers due to its cliched storyline and jokes that did not distinguish it much from the original.

So what are the makers of its third installment to do, but attempt to infuse something totally new in the upcoming film. The first obvious change is Shu Qi, popular actress from Hong Kong, well known for such films as "City of Glass" (1998), "The Transporter" (2002) and "Three Times" (2005).

Shu replaces South Korean actress Sin Eun-kyeong who played the leading character of a housewife and a tough female boss of a gang. Shin starred as the gangster wife in the two previous serials.

"When I first read the scenario, I didn't feel too stressed as it was a totally new movie (compared to its previous films)", Shu Qi said during a news conference held at the Seoul Studio Complex in Namyangju, Kyonggi Province, where the film was being shot. "You will experience something very exciting in the film".

"Basically, as I can't speak Korean, my role in the film is totally different from Sin's roles", she answered laughing when asked about the differences between her and Shin's characters.

Directed by Jo Jin-kyoo, "My Wife Is a Gangster 3" revolves around Aryong (played by Shu Qi), who flees to Seoul as her father's gang is engaged in a severe conflict with another gang in Hong Kong.

The scene she filmed that day involved Aryong having breakfast in an apartment with Korean gangsters whose mission was to act as her bodyguard, but they find themselves in an awkward situation, finding out another night that she is not just a pretty daughter of a boss of a Hong Kong-based gang but also is good at martial arts.

Director Jo, who made the original, said that the film will be like a comic action version of "Roman Holiday", and he avoided using typical formulas often used in the genre of a gangster comedy.

"Personally, I really like `Roman Holiday'. This film will be like its comic action version", Jo said half-joking. "I'd like to avoid such scenes as gangsters' fighting with scantlings in a warehouse. I'm trying to create my own styles in the film putting hilarious jokes and seriousness".

Along with Shu Qi, the film is full of interesting actors, and they are confident of portraying funny characters. Lee Beom-soo, who played a cruel gangster in his latest action film "The City of Violence", is back as a "faithful" and "kind" gangster, and Hyeon Yeong, popular for her cute voice, plays an ethnic Korean from Yanbian as the Korean translator of Aryong.

Shu Qi Returns to MY WIFE IS A GANGSTER 3



Shu Qi temporarily leaves Confession of Pain and returns to the shooting of South Korean production My Wife Is a Gangster 3. Yesterday he was spotted doing a rooftop fight scene in Hong Kong. In the scene, Shu held a Japanese/Korean sword and killed a baddie with a series of swings. This would never happen in real life because the baddie is played by master Ken Lo (Rush Hour, My Faster (sic!) Is a Hero, Drunken Master 2, Operation Condor, Project A 2). The cast also includes another Hong Kong legend Ti Lung (Drunken Master 2, A Better Tomorrow, Chi Ma, New One-Armed Swordsman). It has been scheduled for a release in South Korea this September and the shooting is still not wrapped up after it started in May. Originally Zhang Ziyi, who cameoed in the last sequel, was considered to play the lead, but after she turned the offer down, the role went to Shu Qi.

"My Wife is a Gangster 3" Sold at AFM



"My Wife is a Gangster 3", the latest in the long running crime comedy series has been sold at the American Film Market to no less than 8 Asian territories, achieving a new record for the most money paid for a Korean film at the event.

The film was also sold to Germany, with companies from other European countries and the U.S. still circling the rights. The series has enjoyed a higher profile in the West since the rights to the original "My Wife is a Gangster" were sold for a Hollywood remake back in 2001.

The film's popularity across Asia has no doubt been boosted by the presence of Hong Kong star Shu Qi in the lead role. It is due to hit cinemas December 28th, and also features Korean actors Lee Beom-soo, Hyung Young and Oh Ji-ho.

"My Wife Is A Gangster 3" verlässt komplett die bekannten Gefilde der beiden Vorgängerfilme und führt vollkommen neue Charaktere ein.

Aryong (Shu Qi) die Tochter einer Koreanerin und eines Hong Konger Gangsterbosses (Ti Lung) muss aufgrund ihrer forschen messerschwingenden Art die Stadt verlassen um sich in Sicherheit zu bringen. Sie beschließt in Korea unterzutauchen um nebenbei auch nach ihrer verschwunden Mutter zu suchen. Ein Geschäftspartner ihres Vaters stellt für Aryongs Schutz den Kleingangster Ki-chul (Lee Beom-Su) und seine beiden Handlanger ab. Nach anfänglichen Verständigungsschwierigkeiten entschließt man sich, sich die Dienste der Dolmetscherin Yon-hi (Yu Hyeong-Yeong) zu Nutze zu machen – was von deren Seite aus nicht ganz freiwillig erfolgt.
Die ersten Häscher lassen nicht lange auf sich warten und Ki-chul’s Rettungsversuche sind nur von zweifelhaftem Erfolg gekrönt. Zumal Aryong auch sehr gut auf sich selbst Acht geben kann!
Die Konflikte die sich aus Ki-chuls (Möchtegern-)Macho-Art und der Tatsache dass Aryong eigentlich ständig Herrin der Lage ist ergeben, gipfeln immer wieder in grotesken Situationen oder soliden Actionszenen. Die teilweise sehr frei Übersetzung von Yon-Hi, die diese Fähigkeit mit zunehmender Laufzeit immer mehr für sich nutzt, trägt oftmals nicht unbedingt zur Lösung bei und sorgt dadurch für zusätzliche Komik.

Ein herzhaft frischer Ansatz nach dem doch eher mittelprächtigen zweiten Teil der Serie. Shu Qi darf ihre unterkühlte aber doch verletzliche Rolle aus So Close erneut spielen und damit das geballte Paket koreanischer Männlichkeit mühelos in die Tasche stecken. Eine durchaus gelungene Fortsetzung die zu unterhalten weiß.
