"The Hunger Games" chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual "Hunger Games," a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home. The "Hunger Games" novel has been on the New York Times best seller list for over 100 consecutive weeks. Foreign rights for the book, published by Scholastic have been sold in 41 countries.

Regie führt Gary Ross ("Pleasantville"/"Seabiscuit"). Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter´s Bone") spielt Katniss Everdeen, Liam Hemsworth ("Triangle") Gale Hawthorne, Josh Hutcherson ("Cirque du Freak") Peeta Mellark ... dazu dann noch Woody Harrelson als Haymitch Abernathy, Stanley Tucci als Caesar Flickerman, Wes Bentley als Seneca Crane und Elizabeth Banks als Effie Trinket.

Meine 2Cents (bislang) dazu: Bei der Vorlage handelt es sich ja quasi um "Running Man" trifft "Battle Royale" in der PG13-Variante - zwar nicht unbedingt tiefschürfende oder originelle Kost, nichtsdestotrotz aber mit einer sympathischen Hauptprotagonistin versehen sowie ungemein straff, kurzweilig und unterhaltsam geschrieben. Meine Idealbesetzung für die Rolle der Katniss wäre ganz klar Saoirse Ronan gewesen - aber ihr Part in "Hanna" ist/war wohl einfach zu ähnlich. Jennifer Lawrence ist ne gute Schauspielerin - aber im Grunde fast schon zu alt. Sie wird aber dennoch ne gute Performance abliefern, dessen bin ich mir (nahezu) sicher. Tucci und Harrelson: Passendes Casting! Seneca Crane hätte ich mir zwar etwas älter als Bentley vorgestellt - aber von der Beschreibung im Roman her passt es schon irgendwie. Banks ist gewiss "okay" als Effie. Mal sehen, wen sie als Cinna verpflichen. Ob Gary Ross allerdings der beste Regisseur für die Materie ist - naja, mal abwarten...

Und die Besetzung wächst weiter: Toby Jones spielt den Arena-Moderator Claudius Templesmith und Lenny Kravitz Katniss´ Stylisten Cinna (letztere Wahl ist eigenwillig, könnte aber funktionieren).

Donald Sutherland spielt "President Snow" (laut Lionsgate: President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics).

T Bone Burnett and Danny Elfman to Score The Hunger Games

Lionsgate announced today that Academy Award winner and two time nominee T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart, Cold Mountain) and four time Academy Award nominated composer Danny Elfman (Alice in Wonderland, Spider-Man) are collaborating on the music for the anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games, based on the first in Suzanne Collins's runaway bestselling book trilogy. The announcement was made by Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Elfman and Burnett will be collaborating on the film score, with Burnett also serving as the film's Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack.

Said Lionsgate's Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight of the musical dream team assembled on behalf of the film, "'The Hunger Games' is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it's also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration."

Steven Soderbergh Plays The Hunger Games

In quite a surprising move, Steven Soderbergh has joined the currently-shooting The Hunger Games as a second unit director. The news comes via The Playlist, who spotted the following Tweet from the film's electrician, Chrys Blackstone:

"Holy s--t!" he writes, "Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!

Soderbergh's name was also tweeted by production designer Eddie Mills, who wrote:

"Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!"

Soderbergh, who seems to enjoy remaining unpredictable, will see his next film, Haywire, opening on January 20, 2012.

Targeted for a PG-13 rating, The Hunger Games tells the tale of a dystopic future and the annual "Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live television. The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, Donald Sutherland and many more with a release scheduled for March 23, 2012.

Hätte mir District 12 zwar etwas dreckiger vorgestellt - ansonsten bin ich aber (bislang/weiterhin) zufrieden.

Ich habe jetzt das erste Buch gelesen und hoffe echt das die es gut verfilmen, ich schraube die Erwartungen allerdings erst mal runter um nicht enttäuscht zu werden. Hoffentlich kürzen die die Handlung nicht so wie in Eragon, so das nur noch die Hälfte vom Buch übrig ist

Simon Beaufoy Writing Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

It's always a little strange when a sequel is greenlit before the first installment of a movie comes out, but that's what Lionsgate did with the sequel to the soon-to-be-released adaptation of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, announcing a release date for its sequel Catching Fire last August. That release date set was November 22, 2013, and now, The Wrap's "Deal Central" reports that Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) has been hired to write the adaptation for Collins' second book. It also reports that Gary Ross who co-wrote and directed The Hunger Game (out March 23) is overseeing Beaufoy's work and has been confirmed to return as director for the sequel. Furthermore, they're confirming that four of the cast--Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hensworth--will also be returning, although that's probably not that strange since they all were likely to sign multi-picture deals, since that's standard operating procedure these days.
