Donnie Yen to play Bruce Lee’s Master YIP MAN Director Wilson Yip and martial artist Donnie Yen is collaborating once again on their fourth project together for a biopic on Yip Man, a wing chun master who had Bruce Lee as one of his student. Wu-jing.org reports Donnie will be join by the cast of Lynn Hung, Simon Yam and Lam Ka Tung while Sammo Hung will serve as the martial arts director. The film will mainly focus around the events of Yip Man’s life sometime between the 30s to 40s, taking place in Foshan, China. Here are some comments from Yip & Yen on Yip Man. Donnie Yen, who will be playing the Yip Man, says, “As Yip Man was not only a great master of his times but also the mentor of my idol Bruce Lee, I have never encountered any role that has brought me greater pressure or challenge than this. While I have been training in Wing Chun for 2 months, I don’t think I’m qualified to say that I truly understand Wing Chun. A few months of training won’t be sufficient to be able to propagate its essence. But I’ll rely on my foundation in martial arts and my hard work to promote Wing Chun, to let more people know about Wing Chun, about Yip Man."…
“...I hope that this will not be a pure kungfu film, but one with warmth and affections.” says Wilson Yip. Yip Man’s family will be one of the main themes in the film. Lynn Hung plays Yip Man’s wife, one who supports her husband’s career in wushu initially. However, later on, she becomes upset at her husband for neglecting his kids. Production is set to begin in March and is expected to wrap up in June.

Filming Begins for Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip's Biopic of YIP MAN, Bruce Lee's Master Two promotional stills released to the press.
Shots from a press conference held yesterday in Shanghai. (Images: Mandarin Films, Shanghai Film Group, Corp., Tom.com,QQ.com.)The biopic of Yip Man has been in production in Shanghai for several weeks. This is the fourth collaboration between Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip, after Sha Po Lang, Dragon Tiger Gate and Flash Point. Sammo Hung, who played the main villain in Sha Po Lang is also on board as the action director. The film, jointed-produced by Hong Kong studio Mandarin Films and Shanghai Film Group Corp., is based on the life story of late martial-art master Yip Man from the 1930s to the 1950s. He is known mostly as the teacher of teenage Bruce Lee, and a master of Wing Chun style. The idea of making a movie about Yip Man began over a decade ago. Back then, Wong Kar-Wai, Jeff Lau and Corey Yuen tried to make a Yip Man story, and picked Donnie Yen to play Yip Man and Stephen Chow to play Bruce Lee. The project ended for reasons unknown. Then Wong Kar-Wai said many times that he would do the biopic and Leung Chiu-Wai would play the lead. Of cause, Wong is not a very productive director and his version of Yip Man story is no where near start. The cast also includes Simon Yam, Fan Siu-Wong, Lam Ka-Tung, Xing Yu, Wong You-Nam, Chen Zhihui, Xiong Dailin and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi. The story has already been approved by Yip Man’s two sons, Yip and Yip, both are well over 80. The film is expected to be released theatrically in Hong Kong and the mainland China on December 19, 2008. Quelle: monkeypeaches

YIP MAN Set Visit Photos and Videos Sina.com was invited to the set of Yip Man. A street at Shanghai's Image Maker Studio has been redecorated to look like Foshan City (Guangdong Province) in the 1930s. The scheduled scene is about Yip Man (Donnie Yen), his wife (Xiong Dailin) and their son shopping in the street. More set visit photos. Quelle: monkeypeaches

First FootageIm Titel wird jetzt scheinbar auch das Y weggelassen. Der Film wird demnach nur noch Ip Man heißen.

ReviewHere goes: I confirm that Ip Man is one of the best martial arts films of all time, and among the (very, very few) best Chinese films this year. Hands down.
