James Vanderbilt Writing Spider-Man 4

James Vanderbilt has been brought on board to write the screenplay for Spider-Man 4 for Sony Pictures. Vanderbilt most recently penned David Fincher's Zodiac, polished up the X-Men Origins: Wolverine script, and has written The Rundown, Basic and Darkness Falls. Laura Ziskin is returning as producer of the billion-dollar franchise, though no deals have been made to bring back series director Sam Raimi or stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

Plot points are being closely guarded by the studio, though the intent is to scale back the story to include only two villains instead of repeating the Spider-Man 3 model. Several writers were being considered for the fourth installment, and Vanderbilt apparently was chosen by Sony executives for his character-driven approach to the story rather than a focus on special effects.

Raimi says Spider-Man 4 is Up to Writer

Comic Book Resources has posted an interview with "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi in which he reiterates that what happens in the fourth installment will be up to the writer they are hiring, including the villain(s). Here's a bit from the piece:

Sam: If I was writing it I would have a very strong opinion about that, but we're hiring a writer to come up with his own take. Sony was willing to go either way, we'll just have to wait and see what the writer comes up with. I think anything's possible, though.

I mean, there's been so many different versions, it doesn't have to follow the movies that we've made. I'd very much like to see Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, so I have a personal interest in that, but certainly anything's possible. Spider-Man's such a big character in the comic books that he could endure a lot of different interpretations. You could start over or you could start with a different aspect of the story than I've focused on in the pictures I've made, we'll just have to wait and see what the writer comes up with.

Spider-Man 4 & 5 to be Shot at the Same Time?

Cinematical has received an unconfirmed scoop saying that Zodiac screenwriter James Vanderbilt has turned in a working draft for Spider-Man 4 to Sony Pictures. The really interesting thing, however, is that they say his story arc encompasses two films, opening up the possiblity that the studio might shoot the fourth and fifth film at the same time! If this is indeed accurate, we'll have to see if director Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and others will return for the two films.

Hoffentlich kriegen die Gegner (und auch Spider-Man im kompletten Anzug) dann auch mal mehr Screentime.
Ist eigentlich schon bekannt, ob es neue Hauptdarsteller geben wird? Hätte nämlich nichts dagegen, da Dunst seit Teil 2 eh nicht sympathisch war und Maguire im letzten Teil ziemlich lustlos und albern wirkte.

Spider-Man 4 Targeted for May 2011

The Los Angeles Times reports that "Spider-Man" franchise producer Laura Ziskin said the fourth installment is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in May 2011. Already scheduled for the month of May that year are Marvel's own The First Avenger: Captain America on the 6th and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II. Ziskin added that the screenplay is not finished yet, but that she and Sony Pictures were hopeful Spider-Man 4 could be ready in three years' time. Neither star Tobey Maguire nor director Sam Raimi is yet committed to work on the next installment, but Sony has paid Marvel to renew its rights.

Für mich wäre es ein Grund zur Freude, finde weder Tobey noch Kirsten unbedingt toll. Noch besser wäre es endlich den Schmalz aus den Filmen zu nehmen.

Der erste Teil war noch halbwegs ansehnlich, aber danach wurde es zum kotzen schmalzig, kitschig, klischeehaft, lachhaft etc etc.

Stimme ich voll und ganz zu. Ich fände es auch gut, wenn es einen anderen Regisseur geben würde, Raimi hat sich für mich mit den Filmen in einer völlig falschen Ecke verrannt und frisches Blut würde da mal gut tun.

Sony Eyeing Spider-Man Spinoff

Sony is moving forward with Venom, a potential "Spider-Man" spinoff, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The trade says the studio is developing the project, based on the villain who appeared in Spider-Man 3 and is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging "Spider-Man" franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its "X-Men" franchise.

The studio had commissioned a draft of the script from Jacob Estes (Mean Creek), but the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes' script and is seeking writers for a new draft.

Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace played the character in the film, but agents have been eyeing the role for their clients, as Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a tentpole picture.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that neither Sony nor Marvel would comment for the story.

Sony is also still developing a fourth "Spider-Man" film for 2011.

Ein wenig was kosten lassen muss man sich das Abenteuer aber schon. Im Moment steht das Höchstgebot bei 5.100,- Dollar und die Auktion läuft noch ein paar Tage.

Und ein kleines Risiko ist auch noch dabei: Sony Pictures garantiert dem Meistbietenden nämlich keineswegs, dass er wirklich bei Spiderman dabei ist. Bei ungünstiger Terminlage kann es auch passieren, dass man am Set irgendeines schlechten B-Movies landet.

Dafür tut man mit dem Geld aber wenigstens etwas Gutes. Der Erlös der Versteigerung kommt der Organisation „Stand up to Cancer“ zugute, die sich dem Kampf gegen Krebs verschrieben hat.

Raimi and Maguire Set for Spider-Man 4?

Back in May, Cinematical was the first to report that Sony Pictures might shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 at the same time using James Vanderbilt's script that the site said spans two films.

Now, Deadline Hollywood Daily has added on that director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have apparently signed on the dotted line for Spider-Man 4, which the studio is targeting for a May 2011 release. DHD adds that there's no deal for Kirsten Dunst to return as Mary Jane Watson yet, but the character will be featured and the studio would not recast her.

As for the baddie in the fourth picture, the site says that principal photography doesn't start until the fall of 2009 and that once we find out who the villain we'll know who is playing it. Naturally, speculation would put Dylan Baker's character Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard at the head of the line, but who knows?

According to the site, "the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'"

DHD also says that Sony has hired two screenwriters to pen the new script for the Spidey spin-off Venom.

Tobey Maguire erzielt Mega-Deal

Spider-Man 4 kommt! Nachdem vor kurzem durchsickerte, dass 'Sony Pictures' für die geplante Comicfortsetzung erneut Hauptdarsteller Tobey Maguire ("Pleasantville") verpflichten konnte, gibt es heute offizielle Fakten zu seinem Engagement.

Wie die 'Times Online' berichtet, hat der 33-jährige Schauspieler mit dem Studio einen richtigen Mega-Familien-Deal abschließen können. Maguire erklärte sich bereit, Spider-Man 4 und Spider-Man 5 an einem Stück über einen Zeitraum von 6 Monaten zu drehen (eine sogenannte "Back-to-Back" Inszenierung). Im Gegenzug ließ sich der Kalifornier vertraglich zusichern, morgens und abends genug Zeit mit seiner erst 22 Monate alten Tochter verbringen zu können. Doch nicht nur dieses Detail dürfte ihn zufrieden stimmen, denn des weiteren kassiert er neben Gewinnbeteiligungen für die beiden Filme eine Gage von 50 Millionen US-Dollar! Das ist mehr, als Superstar Keanu Reeves für die beiden Fortsetzungen seines Blockbusters "Matrix" kassieren konnte.

Nachdem Maguire's 3-Filme-Vertrag mit "Spider-Man 3" auslief, hatte der Schauspieler häufiger angekündigt, nie wieder in das rot-blaue Kostüm steigen zu wollen. Nun also die Kehrtwende, er wird definitiv dabei sein. In den nächsten Tagen will 'Sony' bekannt geben, ob Kirsten Dunst in die Rolle der Mary Jane Watson zurückkehren wird. Eine offizielle Bestätigung, dass Regisseur Sam Raimi ("Tanz der Teufel 1-3") ebenfalls wieder mit von der Partie ist, steht bislang noch aus, sollte jedoch sicherlich bald folgen.

Für das Drehbuch hat man vor einiger Zeit bereits James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") verpflichten können. Die Dreharbeiten zum vierten und fünften Teil der Spinnenmann-Saga sollen im Herbst 2009 beginnen, über den bzw. die Bösewicht(e) ist noch nichts bekannt. Insider gehen davon aus, dass die Echse endlich ihren großen Auftritt erhalten wird, zumal dessen Alter Ego Dr. Curt Connors in den vorherigen Filmen bereits eingeführt wurde.

Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4

Both MTV and IGN talked to director Sam Raimi on Sunday about Spider-Man 4, which just received a release date of May 6, 2011 last week.

Raimi says that he and the production team are "in the earliest stages of working with the writer, trying to work out a story." He added that they are just working on the fourth installment and not also a fifth film. Previous reports had claimed that Sony Pictures would be making the fourth and fifth movies at the same time, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The helmer said that they are closing in on Spider-Man's adversary or adversaries for the fourth pic. "All the characters or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee's creations or those that came after him," he said.

And will Kirsten Dunst return as Mary Jane Watson? If it was up to Raimi, definitely: "I’m hoping she'll be in it and I'm planning on having a story with her in it... It wouldn't be the Spider-Man series without her."
