Hua Mu Lan expects to begin filming by the end of the year. Michelle Yeoh is stepping down as the eponymous role, playing another character who is closer to her age, while Zhang Ziyi has been named to take over her as Hua Mu Lan, depending on her availability. Chow Yun Fatt and Lucy Liu are also expected to join the movie. Peter Pau may not be the director anymore. The movie will make use of the four seasons, their changes, colours and beautiful sceneries to represent a distinct theme. The story begins with Summer which represents peace in the movie; Autumn, shown by the yellow earth, signifies war; Winter, portrayed by the northern snow, tells of the loneliness amidst the war, of love; The movie concludes with Spring, where everything returning to normal, with affluence everywhere.  Chinese Business View, Bigstar

Michelle Yeoh not going to be Mulan

"Variety" has reported that Michelle Yeoh has abandoned plans to star in a live action film of Hua Mulan, but instead will be one of the executive producers, sharing credits with Terence Chang, John Woo's long-time producer and business partner, and David Dong, who runs "Meridian Pictures Group", a Shanghai-based company. The film budget is about $20 million and it is aimed for a late 2007 release. Taiwanese "UDN" reporter spoke with Michelle at Cannes recently about the "Variety" report on Hua Mulan. Michelle said the crew members will include Peter Pau as cinematographer and Tim Yip as the art director, both of whom worked with Michelle on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. A director has yet to be decided on.

Yeoh did say, though, that there is a possibility she may play the role of Hua Mulan's master - a skilled martial artist and a nun - in the film. Chow Yun Fat has long been rumored to be the top candidate for the male lead, but nothing has been confirmed.

Two More Enter the Battle for HUA MULAN

Variety reports that a previously little known Chinese studio Meridian Pictures Group, owned by Shanghai textiles tycoon David Dong, just reached a deal with Terence Chang, a long-term partner of John Woo, about jointly producing a feature film about Hua Mulan. The report implies that the partnership now owns the script written by Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon writer Wang Hui-Ling. Newspaper The Beijing News reports The Weinstein Company has already signed up as a co-producer of the heroine project. Michelle Yeoh and her ex-boyfriend Thomas Chung once planned to shoot a movie about Hua Mulan and commissioned Wang to pen the script. Also according to The Beijing News, Wang confirms that her script has been sold to Meridian, with help from Yeoh, but Thomas Chung, who has partnered with Beijing-based studio Huayi Brothers to produce a separate Hua Mulan project, claims he still owns the copyright of the script. President of Huayi Brothers Wang Zhong Lei told The Beijing News that they would try to solve the copyright dispute and might consider to merge two Hua Mulan projects into one. The Variety story also mentions Hollywood producer Barrie M. Osborne has agreed to produce Meridian's biggest-budget project, Princess of Loulan (misspelled as 'Luolan"). Meridian has also been contracted to produced three or four Johnnie To movies over six years, starting in 2007.

Young Pop Star Li Yuchun in Talk to play Stanley Tong's MULAN

Last year, 21 year old Chinese music student suddenly became a household name after winning an American Idol-like TV singing contest. Her story of success is so influential that even Time Asia put her picture on an issue of the magazine last year (Click here). Now according to Shanghai-based News Times, Li is negotiating with director Stanley Tong for playing the lead role in his long awaited Hua Mulan, backed by Beijing-based PKU Starlight. Another report suggests Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has volunteered for playing the role. Two other Chinese studios are separately pushing for their own Hua Mulan projects. They are H. Brothers (aka. HTF / Huayi Brothers) and Meradian Pictures Group, partnered with Lion Rock Productions.

Li Yuchun Might Not Play Mulan

The lead role of the live-action version of "Mulan" has yet to be unveiled, but newspaper China Business View reports director Stanley Tong has ruled out Li Yuchun, the winner of the "Super Girl" singing competition in 2005.

Katie Leung, who plays Cho Chang in the "Harry Potter" films, is likely to be chosen to star the legendary Chinese heroine.

The newspaper says the investment company also favors the Scotland-born Chinese girl, who is better known outside China.

The film, with a 200 million yuan budget, is set to start shooting in October.

Ist dasselbe Projekt.
Ma hat von Stanley Tong übernommen und seine Wunschkandidatin durchgesetzt.
Klingt jetzt ein bißchen nach Butterfly Lovers.
